JOSEPH ADAM HELLE, called JOSSEL, was a baker, distiller and brewer. He lived in House Number 269; later 145. On the Jossel House built in 1819 is an inscription noting that the house is listed in the books written by Preising, page 68, and Bender, page 366.

Joseph and Maria were the great grandparents of Dr. Hans Helle and Fritz Helle, editors of the scroll; and the grand uncle and grand aunt of Frederick Helle, Smithfield, IL, U.S.A.

For allegedly ridiculing Emperor Napoleon, JOSEPH ADAM was imprisoned in the Fortress of Giessen from 1808 to 1810.

In 1823 Joseph and Maria had a building built at Hachtorstrasse 23 to house their bakery - brewery business. The business has remained in the family to the present time.
