MARTHA BERNADINA "DENA" HELLE was born when Frederick and Katharine (Krauser) Helle were living in Bushnell, Illinois, in the interim between their return from Louisville, Kentucky, and their purchase of the eighty acre nucleus of the Helle Homestead in Cass Township near Spoon River. Less than three years old when the family moved to the land, she grew to maturity there. The fourth living child of this large family.

John Kuehn Dies:
Funeral Saturday Smithfield, Aug. 1 -- (Special) -- John H. Kuehn, resident of Smithfield for more than 50 years, died yesterday in the Graham hospital, where he had been a patient for a month. Born in Fulton county Jan. 28, 1864, a son of Christopher and Maria (Walter) Kuehn, he was married on Nov. 17, 1897 in Cass township to Miss Martha Dena Helle. Soon after their wedding they moved to Smithfield, where they have since resided. A farmer for several years, and later engaged in the insurance business, he was a member of the Zion Lutheran church, the Cuba Masonic lodge A. F. & A.M. for the last 54 years, and the Macomb Royal Arch chapter.
Surviving are his widow, a sister, Mrs. Mary Katherine Finney, Sheridan, Ill.; a half - brother, C. C. Kuehn, Smithfield, and two half - sisters, Mrs. Pauline Larrimore, Beecher City, and Mrs. Margaret Ernestine Mitchell, Ellisville.
Dena's obituary, appeared in the Canton Daily Ledger and read, in part:
... She had been a resident of the Smithfield community all her life until her illness
The couple had no children, but she is survived by 41 nieces and nephews, and one sister, Mrs. Carrie Walters, Frederick, III. Four brothers and seven sisters preceded her in death.
The Rev. J. E. Sibert, Astoria, and the Rev. Henry W. Wortrnan, pastor, will conduct services at 2 p.m. CST Tuesday in the Smithfield Evangelical United Brethren church. Burial will be in Baughnian cemetery....
